Fibonacci retracement calculator

A Fibonacci retracement marks the price levels where traders expect a pullback to pause, at 23.6%, 38.2%, 50% and 61.8% of the previous move. Enter the swing high and swing low, pick whether price advanced or declined, and the calculator gives each level. It runs in your browser.

Nothing you type leaves your browser. This is arithmetic, not advice.

How it is calculated

after an advance: level = high - (high - low) x ratio after a decline: level = low + (high - low) x ratio

Worked example. Bitcoin rises from a swing low of 50,000 to a swing high of 60,000, a move of 10,000. The 23.6% level is 60,000 - 2,360 = 57,640. The 38.2% level is 56,180, the 50% level is 55,000 and the 61.8% level is 53,820. The 0% line is the high and the 100% line is the low.

The ratios come from the Fibonacci sequence. Dividing a number by the next one up approaches 0.618, and dividing it by the number two places up approaches 0.382. StockCharts lists 23.6%, 38.2%, 50% and 61.8% as the four common retracements.

Do the levels work?

Traders use them, and many charts have a reaction near one. The evidence that they predict price is weak. Wikipedia reports that their "significance, however, could not be confirmed by examining the data", and that backtests over thousands of stocks found the 38%, 50% and 62% values no likelier to appear than other retracement values. Treat them as places to look, together with other signals.

This page covers retracements only. Extension levels are anchored differently from one charting platform to another, so we do not guess at them.

Questions

How do I draw a Fibonacci retracement?

Find a clear swing low and swing high. After an advance, measure from the high down toward the low. After a decline, measure from the low up toward the high. The calculator does the arithmetic for both.

Which Fibonacci levels are used?

23.6%, 38.2%, 50% and 61.8% are the four common ones. 0% and 100% are the two ends of the swing. The 50% line is not a Fibonacci ratio. Traders use it because it is the halfway point.

Are my numbers saved or sent anywhere?

No. The calculation runs in your browser.
